WEEK 1

Welcome and Introduction to the Course. Icebreaker

Learning Objectives:

On completion of this session you will be able:

  • to describe the domestic arrangements and the main house rules

  • to demonstrate your ability to recognise colleagues and tutors.

 

Networking - Topics presented by the participants.

Learning Objectives:

On completion of this session you will be able:

  • to appraise experiences of course members

  • to explain more about topics of members’ choosing, following discussion with them

  • to describe in greater detail a topic of your own choosing, following discussion with course members.

 

Theory and Practice of Teambuilding

Learning Objectives:

On completion of this session you will be able:

  • to state and recognise the core characteristics of teams

  • to describe the communication skills used in teamwork

  • to explain how to create and maintain teams

  • to describe how to integrate teams into the wider organisation.

 

Setting Objectives

Learning Objectives:

On completion of this session you will be able:

  • to recognise the need to plan and set objectives

  • to describe a theoretical model of planning and how to use it

  • to identify and describe the range of situations in which planning is needed.

 

Members’ Course Projects

Learning Objectives:

On completion of this session you will be able to describe what is required from your project for the course in terms of:

  • the aims and objectives

  • the project work

  • the report of the project to be made during the second week of the course

  • the summary of the project.


 

Business Planning and Making a Business Case

Learning Objectives:

On completion of this session you will be able:

  • to demonstrate, by practice, two types of preparatory analysis which should be undertaken in the pharmacy in order to make an effective business case

  • to recognise the principles of making a business case

  • to define the main steps in making a business case

  • to show, by practice, how to make a business case.

 

Planning Exercise

A planning exercise provides an opportunity to practice problem-based learning in a small group during several sessions.

Learning Objective:

On completion of the first session you will be able to describe a model of a secondary care Trust and its pharmaceutical service.

On completion of the second session you will be able to show, by practice, the application of the objective-setting model. (See above.)

On completion of the third session you will be able to prepare a timed presentation

On completion of final session you will be able:

  • to show, by practice, the presentation of a group’s findings

  • to deliver a timed presentation

  • to recognise and reflect upon positive and negative points from your own team’s approach, and the approaches of others, to the same task.


 

Leadership and Motivation

Learning Objectives:

On completion of this session you will be able:

  • to describe techniques used in the management of people

  • to recognise management styles with regard to leadership and motivation

  • to describe theories of motivation at the place of work

  • to describe a method for evaluating yourself and others

  • to explain and prepare action plans.

 

Influencing Skills, Face-to-face, Including Negotiation

Learning Objectives:

On completion of this session you will be able:

  • to describe the use of influencing skills as fundamental, essential tools for use by managers on a day-to-day basis

  • to chose the best approach to a particular challenge

  • to recognise the essentials of collecting, collating and using information

  • to use influencing skills face-to-face.

 

An Introduction to Finance for Pharmacists

Learning Objectives:

On completion of this session you will be able:

  • to state basic financial concepts

  • to explain the application of these concepts in the NHS

  • to demonstrate basic financial skills through practical exercises.

 

Preparing a Budget

Learning Objectives:

On completion of this session you will be able:

  • to describe the purpose of budgets

  • to analyse a sample NHS budget

  • to use financial skills to prepare a budget relevant to your work place.

 

WEEK 2

The content of the second week of each course is chosen by course members at the end of the first week.
