National Development Scheme for
Senior Pharmacists

(Sometimes referred to as a 'Morpeth' course)

This development scheme was originally established with support from the Chief Pharmacist's office. It has undergone continuous needs-led development for the past quarter of a century to meet the changing needs of the hospital pharmaceutical service. It is not marketed aggressively but relies heavily on being commended to others, by word of mouth, by previous participants.

The course is aimed primarily at hospital pharmacists of band 8 and above. (Given that there are variations in grading, applications from band 7 pharmacists will, however, be considered if their responsibilities warrant this – such cases may be discussed with the Course Leader.)

The Course is accredited by the College of Pharmacy Practice.

Course format

The course takes up relatively little time.

The format comprises one week of residential study, followed by a second residential week six months later. Each participant undertakes a work-related project during the intervening period. The course work is essentially participative and includes sessions presented in a tutorial setting, as well as workshops in small groups.

It is not unusual for staff to feel apprehensive about joining a course such as this. The course tutors are aware of this. They take positive steps to ensure that participants do not feel threatened.

The course provides an environment in which members may gain insight into their own performance. They can share their experiences with colleagues. Besides gaining knowledge of the topics considered, it is a common experience for participants to develop confidence in their own innate management abilities during the course.

Session leaders are encouraged to make the sessions relaxed, informal and interactive. Considerable use is made of small-group, problem-based working. Course members evaluate each session.
