National Development Scheme for Senior Pharmacy Technicians
Course format
The format comprises one week of residential
study, followed by a second residential week six months later. Each
course member undertakes a work-related project during the
intervening period. The course work includes informal, participative
sessions as well as workshops in small groups. The course is accredited by the
College of Pharmacy Practice.
It is not unusual for staff to feel apprehensive about joining a
course such as this. The course tutors are aware of this. They take
positive steps to ensure that participants do not feel threatened
and are able to develop confidence in their own management abilities
during the course.
A major benefit accruing from a course such as this is networking
among the participants and this is strongly encouraged throughout
the course

Projects:
Each course member must have a nominated work-place mentor to support them during their project work. The mentor must agree at least one work-related project topic with their course member and support them in preparing draft objectives for the work prior to the first week of the course. (Notes on what is required will be provided.)
Time is allocated in the first residential week to allow each member to discuss objectives for their project with a tutor. This is aimed at producing agreed, firm objectives.
The project is intended to give the course member opportunities to relate the skills and knowledge gained during the first week of the course to their work and also to be of practical use at work.
Second Week:
There is flexibility to allow the programme content of the second week to take account of the needs of the participants.
There is a session at the end of the first week in which members consider and identify topics for the second week. Topics for possible inclusion in the second week are listed opposite. The tutors will consider other suggestions.
